Brendan Hooft – Empowers Future Digital Workforce Through ESPER

Brendan Hooft, a seasoned expert and the CEO & Managing Partner at ESPER, shares his expertise in bridging the significant gap in the digital workforce. In this enlightening interview, we explore Brendan Hooft’s vision for elevating the coaching landscape for digital teams and his strategic approach to professional development. ESPER provides valuable insights into the reasons behind the current failures of many digital strategies, programs, and initiatives. A crucial focus is placed on the talent and culture divide, demanding our attention.

The journey of founder and co-founders?

The turning point in my career came after experiencing two personal traumas in 2022 and 2023. In the aftermath of these challenges, I found myself seeking a renewed sense of purpose, meaning, and impact. It was during this introspective phase that I made the pivotal decision to establish “ESPER.”

Collaborating with esteemed founding CIOs and exceptional individuals, we embarked on a journey to identify and address a fundamental problem in the digital landscape. Our collective vision materialized into the creation of the first-of-its-kind comprehensive academy – a transformative initiative designed to not only attract and retain but also to systematically build high-performing digital teams.

The core philosophy behind ESPER revolves around the concept of Digital Fusion. It signifies an organizational state characterized by the seamless integration of exceptional talent and a highly engaged culture, working in tandem to deliver sustainable high performance. Digital Fusion isn’t just a concept; it’s a paradigm shift in how we approach and cultivate excellence within digital teams.

What drove you to choose a career in this domain?

Over my nine-year tenure as the head of the Middle East and Africa division for Gartner, I gained profound insights into the shortcomings of digital strategies. It became evident that conventional approaches employed by both government entities and enterprises were falling short of anticipated outcomes.

To delve deeper into this issue, we initiated comprehensive research, uncovering a staggering revelation – 93% of technology executives acknowledged that challenges related to people and talent were impeding their progress. This pivotal finding has been documented in our latest Forbes publication, a platform where I proudly serve as a Forbes Council Member. This experience has fueled my commitment to addressing the critical nexus between talent and technological success, shaping my journey towards establishing ESPER.

What motivates you to persevere through difficult times?

In navigating my professional journey, I prioritize three essential principles that drive my system. Firstly, maintaining a constant awareness of the underlying purpose and the ‘why’ behind my actions serves as a continual source of motivation. This conscious understanding fuels my resilience and perseverance – qualities that are indispensable in the professional landscape.

Secondly, the emphasis on relationships remains paramount in my philosophy. Gratitude fills me for the strong support system I have in the form of family, friends, and professional relationships. These connections contribute significantly to my personal and professional well-being, reinforcing the importance of fostering meaningful bonds.

Lastly, the bedrock of ESPER’s success lies in the trust and faith vested in us by our business relationships. The fact that they choose ESPER as a client is not just a business transaction; it’s a demonstration of their belief in our mission. This trust is invaluable and a top priority to reciprocate. We are committed to honoring this trust by excelling in what we do, striving to create unparalleled value for our clients, and continuously upholding the standards that have earned us their confidence.

How do you consistently engage in ongoing learning and foster professional evolution?

In my role as the Founder and Managing Partner of ESPER, Learning and Development (L&D) stands as a cornerstone of our ethos. In the ever-evolving terrain of business, transition is not just unavoidable, but constant. Recognizing this, we emphasize the imperative of acquiring new and sustainable skills for individuals aspiring to thrive and progress in their careers.

On a more personal note regarding Learning and Development, our focus extends to the younger generation at ESPER. We take immense pride in going the extra mile, exemplified by our tailored service catering to ‘high potential’ talent within technology teams. These individuals represent the future, and at ESPER, we are dedicated to nurturing their growth, ensuring they emerge as leaders in their respective fields.

This commitment to fostering the potential of emerging talent aligns with our broader mission of contributing to the continuous evolution and sustainability of the technology industry.

How do you incorporate creative ideas to differentiate yourself?

In the realm of innovation and creativity, several key concepts warrant consideration, particularly for executives navigating dynamic business landscapes. Let me elaborate on two pivotal aspects:

Cultivating a Culture of Innovation

Central to fostering innovation is the establishment of a culture characterized by vulnerability and open collaboration. This necessitates a departure from traditional paradigms of organizational dynamics. Fostering an atmosphere where people are at ease taking chances and freely exchanging ideas, and collaborating freely is essential. This cultural shift also involves reimagining rewards and incentives, challenging conventional approaches to performance management, and redefining workforce design to align with the principles of innovation.

Strategic Investment in Talent

A paradigm shift is evident in the assessment of talent. Traditional resumes, while informative, often fail to directly correlate with performance in contemporary organizational settings. Recognizing this, executives must invest in talent with a nuanced perspective. While foundational skills remain valuable, they are increasingly overshadowed by the demand for new capabilities, especially in rapidly evolving domains like AI.

The emphasis is on cultivating and developing novel skills, with communication and social intelligence emerging as critical attributes. This shift underscores the evolving nature of skill sets, reinforcing the imperative for executives to invest strategically in talent to navigate the complexities of modern business environments successfully.
