Sustainable City Dubai Elevates Community Living with Autonomous Delivery Robots

The Sustainable City Dubai, the region’s first fully sustainable community, has started a new pilot project with delivery robots. This project is a collaboration with Dubai Future Labs and Lyve Global.

Beginning this month, three self-driving delivery robots, created by Dubai Future Labs, will start their trial run in The Sustainable City community. These robots will offer delivery services from all the restaurants and shops in the plaza area directly to residents. They will use a smart interface provided by Lyve Global to manage these deliveries.

The Sustainable City in Dubai is designed to be fully pedestrian-friendly and car-free within its residential areas. This makes it an ideal place for using autonomous delivery robots. These robots are being tested to make last-mile deliveries, which means they take packages from a nearby location directly to people’s homes. The robots use advanced technology to ensure deliveries are safe, clean, and cost-effective. They also help reduce traffic, lower carbon emissions, and shorten waiting times for deliveries.

Khalifa Al Qama, the Director of Dubai Future Labs at Dubai Future Foundation, emphasized the importance of this project. He explained that it plays a crucial role in developing robotics technology for transportation, shipping, and logistics in Dubai. This project shows Dubai’s dedication to using technology to drive innovation and enhance the quality of life for its residents.

Delivery robots

The delivery robots will provide services from all restaurants and shops in the plaza area to the homes of residents. These services are managed through a smart system powered by Lyve Global, making the delivery process smooth and efficient.

These cutting-edge robots are made especially to guarantee quick product delivery in a short amount of time—less than thirty minutes. They can safely and effectively traverse their environment because of the cutting-edge technology they are outfitted with. For example, the robots can identify obstacles in their path and avoid them, ensuring that they can make their deliveries without any issues. They are also programmed to recognize and locate charging stations. They can self-recharge thanks to this ability, which does not require human assistance.

The deployment of these delivery robots, according to Al Qama, is a great fit with the goals established by the “Dubai Robotics and Automation Program.” His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Defence, and the Chairman of the Dubai Future Foundation’s Board of Trustees, introduced this program in September 2022. The Dubai Robotics and Automation Program aims to enhance the city’s technological infrastructure by integrating advanced robotics and automation solutions into everyday life.

The program has several key goals, including improving efficiency in various sectors, reducing the need for manual labor, and promoting sustainability through the use of innovative technologies. The delivery robots are a prime example of how these goals are being put into action. By reducing delivery times and operating autonomously, these robots contribute to a more efficient and streamlined delivery process.

Additionally, their ability to recharge independently ensures they can operate continuously without needing frequent human assistance, further enhancing their efficiency and sustainability.

The deployment of these robots is a significant step towards realizing the vision set out by the Dubai Robotics and Automation Program. It showcases how cutting-edge technology can be used to improve daily life in the city, making it more convenient and sustainable for residents. The use of these robots not only demonstrates Dubai’s commitment to innovation but also highlights the city’s role as a leader in adopting advanced technologies.

Fadi Alfaris, the General Manager of NZE Solutions at SEE Holding, shared some exciting news:

“We have successfully combined sustainable living and cutting-edge technology. The Sustainable City in Dubai is testing new ideas and integrated solutions. This is the perfect place to try out autonomous delivery robots and plan for their future use. The residential areas here are designed to be car-free, making it safe and easy to test and operate these advanced robots. This ensures the safety of the residents and provides a controlled environment to make the delivery robots work as efficiently as possible.”

He also mentioned,

The Sustainable City in Dubai has been carefully planned to be ready for the future. It can easily adopt new technologies and adjust to new needs. The city acts as a real-life testing ground, always trying out new ideas and solutions to stay sustainable. This helps the city lead the way toward a future with zero emissions.

Hassan Hallas, the CEO of Lyve Global, shared his excitement about working with Dubai Future Labs to bring advanced delivery robots to the Sustainable City.

He emphasized that this project shows their dedication to both innovation and sustainability. By teaming up, they aim to create a smarter and more connected future in the logistics industry. This collaboration will help improve how goods are delivered, making the process more efficient and environmentally friendly.

A team of robotic experts and engineers from Dubai Future Labs has locally developed these delivery robots. These robots come with many advanced features to make deliveries efficient and secure. They have a Fleet Management System that allows for real-time tracking of the robots. Lyve Global has created a backend system to handle order fulfillment and delivery operations smoothly. Additionally, these robots have a Secured Delivery Compartment that can only be opened by the customer, ensuring that deliveries are safe and secure.

Within the community, these autonomous delivery robots promise prompt delivery in less than thirty minutes. They will move safely on sidewalks by themselves, find charging stations when needed, and work without human help.

This project supports Dubai’s bigger goal of making 25% of all trips done by autonomous vehicles by 2030. It also helps Dubai’s vision of becoming the smartest city in the world.
