UAE: As the end of the spiritually significant month for Muslims, Ramadan, is approaching, the Emirates’ Fatwa Council has encouraged the nation’s Muslim residents to observe the sighting of the new moon of the Shawwal. The Council also appealed that any resident who observed the sighting of the Shawwal moon on March 29 evening must contact the authority and submit their testament, as it will mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Significance of Shawwal Moon Sighting for Eid Al Fitr 2025
The sighting of the new crescent moon determines the end of the holy month of Ramadan and will mark the date for the joyous celebration, Eid Al Fitr, which is celebrated worldwide by people of the Muslim diaspora. Marking the end of Ramadan, the festive celebration on this day starts with a large communal morning prayer. After the prayer, they enjoy a special feast or meal with family or friends, marking the end of the month-long fast.
On this day, they visit their families and friends to share the joy of this celebration day and strengthen bonds with their loved ones. As a symbol of generosity and goodwill, they exchange gifts among themselves. Apart from reconciliation, Eid Al Fitr 2025 will be a time to express gratitude to Allah, who blessed them with strength and patience during this holy month.

29 March: Expected Eid Al Fitr 2025 Date in UAE & Saudi Arabia
All the countries across the globe are preparing for the sighting of the new moon of the 10th month of the Islamic calendar, which is expected to be sighted on March 29, 2025. The Emirates’ Astronomy Centre has notified about the sighting; however, the centre also announced that in many parts of the world, the crescent moon sighting will not be possible. Additional information, including a general location and a map, has been provided by the authorities, indicating where the moon is most likely to be visible on March 29.
Announcing the expected day for Eid Al Fitr 2025 moon sighting, the center said it will not be possible for the world to observe the first Shawwal moon sighting in the eastern parts of the world. Also, the statement from the center clarified that people will not be able to observe moon sightings in the rest of the Arab and Islamic world using any observation methods, including telescopes, the naked eye, and astrophotography.
Public Holidays & Eid Al Fitr 2025 Celebrations
Astronomers have predicted that the holy month of Ramadan is expected to last for 30 days, and March 30 will mark its end in 2025. If things go according to astronomical calculations, the first day of Eid will fall on March 31. Last week, announcements were released by the UAE ministries regarding the public holidays for Eid Al Fitr for both the public and private sectors. So, if the first Shawwal moon is sighted on March 29, the residents will be granted holidays from March 29 till April 1. However, if the new moon of Shawwal is sighted on March 30, the four-day break will extend to a five-day break from March 30 to April 2.
