A complete journey about the company?
When we began, we didn’t plan to become an events company. It started off as a luxury flower shop’s home business. “You have a good eye and taste,” our friends and family said, encouraging us to try events after recognizing our potential. At that time, I often looked at Pinterest and Instagram for interior design ideas, even though I was a florist.
We decided to give events a try. We successfully converted from a flower store to an events company with the help of friends, particularly the one who placed our first order. Our first project was large, and I was anxious. When attendees began inquiring about our business, MOD Design Events was born.
What motivates you to persevere through difficult times?
The design world is very exciting. Once you start, you always want to do more and take on bigger projects. Moving from being a florist to an event planner was hard because the jobs were so different. I kept returning back to doing nothing but flowers when I was really weary, but I couldn’t help myself. I usually feel like it might be my last year, yet nevertheless, I always end myself going back.
Have you ever questioned your ability to deliver?
My first big project made me nervous. I usually have doubts at the start, but once I begin, I am determined to finish. Sanad, the other co-founder of MOD and my business partner gave me encouragement, saying, “Take it because I know you will make it perfect.” The project had 600 guests, which was a big deal for us. It wasn’t just about the size; it was about the challenge it presented.
Do you believe your experience as a florist contributed to your success in event planning?
Definitely. As a kid, I always loved design. Although my family preferred that I pursue a more conventional professional route, working in a flower shop allowed me to pursue my passion for design. Over time, I realized my passion was bigger than just floristry; it included interior design and more.
How do you incorporate creative ideas to differentiate yourself?
A pioneer in modern event design, MOD was the first company to concentrate on it. Back then, most events used a lot of flowers and fancy decorations. I preferred interior design and simple styles, so we started making modern, minimalist designs. This approach is popular with the new generation who like simplicity and quality. We always use the best materials, often ones meant for interiors, in our projects.
Can you share examples of some of the most memorable events you’ve organized and explain how you made them successful?
During COVID-19 in 2021, we received a request for a major event. I answered yes when a friend asked if I could take it on while I was on vacation. It was a novel challenge for us to have to build a venue from the ground up. The client trusted our taste even though we didn’t have a lot of big projects in our portfolio. We successfully completed the project for a wonderful bride, Kharida Al-Lootah.
Can you explain how you work with clients from the first idea to the final event?
Most clients find us after attending one of our events. To learn about their tastes and styles, we first meet. While some clients trust us to come up with the idea, others bring a mood board. We create two design options: an original one and one that incorporates our own thoughts. We can make sure we live up to their expectations in this way. We present 3D renderings and all the physical materials and details. Then, we move on to executing the plan on the day of the event.
