The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai, in a significant announcement for daily commuters, has added a new route to the Dubai Metro Red Line that will help to reduce congestion and provide greater access to travel over the city during peak travel times. Given the population of Dubai and the use of public transport across the city on a daily basis by thousands of residents, this announcement was well received by those who have travelled during peak times and experienced overcrowding on the metro, especially on their way to and from work during both morning and evening peak hours. The new route will provide improved passenger flow, resulting in enhanced transportation efficiency for the metro during peak periods. Therefore, the new route is a proactive approach taken by the RTA in continuing to upgrade the public transport system within the city and meet the needs of the travelling residents.
A Third Route Added to the Red Line
The Dubai Metro Red Line is one of the busiest and longest metro routes in Dubai, but as of today, a third route has been added during peak hours. Up to now, the Red Line has had two routes running across all hours of the day.
1. Centrepoint to Expo 2020 Station and return
2. Centrepoint to Life Pharmacy Station and return
However, during the busiest hours of the day, the Red Line will now have a new route:
3. Centrepoint to Al Fardan Exchange Station and return
This means that also during peak hours, the Red Line will have three different services from Centrepoint, which will help to distribute passenger traffic more efficiently and reduce wait times and crowding.
When Does the New Route Operate?
The newly added Centrepoint–Al Fardan Exchange route will only run during peak hours, which are defined as:
- Morning Peak: 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM
- Evening Peak: 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM
These hours reflect the times when the metro experiences the highest number of riders, typically when office-goers and students are traveling to and from their destinations.
Overview of Stations Covered on the New Route
The new route will provide improved passenger flow, resulting in enhanced transportation efficiency for the metro during peak periods, reflecting the spirit of Dubai’s best startup story in innovation and growth. The full list of stations covered under the Centrepoint–Al Fardan Exchange route includes:

Why the New Route Matters: Reducing Congestion
According to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the primary objective of introducing the new route is to ease pressure on trains during rush hours, when crowding is at its peak. Previously, many passengers who were traveling shorter distances along the Red Line had to share carriages with those commuting the entire length from Centrepoint to Expo 2020, resulting in significant overcrowding, especially at busy interchange stations like Union, BurJuman, Business Bay, and Mall of the Emirates.
By adding a new route that terminates at Al Fardan Exchange, the RTA aims to split passenger flow across three different endpoints, allowing for more efficient use of train capacity. This approach helps reduce travel time for those not going all the way to Expo 2020, enables more frequent train service during peak hours, and significantly improves overall passenger comfort and safety.
Commuter Reactions: Mixed but Mostly Positive
People have largely received the changes to the Dubai Metro positively. Numerous commuters have appreciated the added stop. For example, regular metro user Sunaira Sohail discussed her struggle prior to the new service being available. “Especially during peak hours, like 5 pm when offices close, the metro is so busy sometimes I wait about 30 minutes just to get on,” she said. “If this new system successfully mitigates that congestion, it could not just secure commuters’ safety, but also improve the commuting experience of passengers overall.”
Other passengers also observed that the additional train during peak service has cut wait times at platforms down to four to five minutes. Even though the new route does not serve every destination for everyone, it has still helped passengers with their journeys by easing congestion in cabins.
More to Come: Dubai Metro Expansion Plans
The RTA’s most recent news release is part of a larger plan to grow Dubai’s public transport system. In addition to gaining the Green Line and Red Line extensions, the RTA is currently building the Blue Line, which will be completed in 2029. The Blue Line will provide over 30 kilometers of rail service, 14 stations, and greater connectivity between newer developments throughout the city. Over the next couple of decades, the Dubai Metro is expected to have over 240 stations, which will cover 228 square kilometers, enhance connectivity for the commuting public, reduce vehicle congestion, and provide wider access for commuters throughout the emirate.
A Step in the Right Direction
It is encouraging to see the new Centrepoint added to the Al Fardan Exchange route on the Red Line, providing another pickup point for the thousands of commuters who use this every day. This demonstrates the RTA has taken the feedback and is making the right move by proactively addressing the demands of a fast-moving city.
The RTA is making metro travel in Dubai more efficient and pleasant by providing more peak-hour services so commuters don’t have the stress of overcrowding. As the city increases in population and the public transport network continues to grow, these are the types of initiatives that will help support a smarter and more commuter-friendly Dubai.
