Stunning Buck Moon Lights Up UAE Skies: First Full Moon of Summer

On July 10, the residents in Sharjah were blessed to witness the beautiful views of the Buck Moon. Based on the reports from Dubai Astronomy Group, the first full moon of summer appeared in the skies of the UAE’s cultural capital on Thursday. This moon appears every year in July, and it got its name from Native American traditions.

People across the Emirates were excited to witness this special event. According to DAG’s Operations Manager, Khadija Al Hariri, the best time to spot this beautiful moon was shortly after moonrise at 7:10 PM near the eastern horizon and again close to midnight.

The Special Buck Moon Sightings in the UAE

The Buck Moon appears bigger and more golden when it rises, especially when seen low on the horizon. The Buck Moon gets its name from Native American traditions. It’s the time when male deer start growing their antlers. Even though there is no scientific connection to this moon’s name, it is used today to help people feel more connected to the sky. Khadija Al Hariri added that such names make astronomy easier to understand and more enjoyable for everyone.

The Dubai Astronomy Group, often celebrated as one of the best startup story in UAE’s science and education space, shared through an Instagram post that the Buck Moon will stay low in the sky in the northern hemisphere. As its light travels through more of Earth’s atmosphere, it might appear in a warm orange or reddish hue. The post also said that the moon might appear larger than usual, but it is just a visual illusion called the moon illusion.

The views of the buck moon in the Southern Hemisphere are different, as the moon rises much higher in the sky. It reached its brightest point on July 10 at 20:37 GMT. Those who have missed this exact moment don’t need to be sad, as this moon will remain visible the day before and after, and its views can be enjoyed without a telescope.
