The lane that survived winter is not the lane that will survive spring
By late winter an Australian gravel driveway has taken months of rain, and the damage runs deeper than the ruts showing on top. The base has softened and stone has migrated to the edges, so a land plane on a skid steer is what most properties reach for before dry weather sets the surface hard.
The common mistake is treating that repair as one operation. A single trip with a land plane smooths what the eye sees while leaving the loosened base untouched, and the lane is rutted again within a fortnight of the first heavy vehicle.
A smeared surface hides a soft base rather than repairing it
Wet fines behave like a paste. Dragged along the lane they fill the low spots, glaze over, and present a flat appearance with no strength behind it. The stone that should carry the load still sits where the winter left it, below the crust.
A repair that lasts has to lift that stone back into the wearing surface and rebind it with the fines, which means the material must be broken loose before it is redistributed. The sequence of passes therefore matters more than the hours spent.
The first pass is for ripping, and the lane looks worse afterwards
Setting the scarifier teeth of a land plane to full depth and travelling slowly turns the compacted crust into loose material without regard for grade. Nothing improves visually during this pass, and an operator who stops here leaves the surface worse than the day started.
Depth is judged by what comes up rather than by a marked setting. Teeth riding on the surface leave the base intact, while teeth driven too deep drag subgrade clay into a stony surface. A lane near Bendigo took two shallow ripping passes instead.
The second pass is where the grade is actually made
With the material loose the teeth come up and the machine travels faster. The frame of a land plane spans the ruts rather than dropping into them, and the cutting edges work freed stone forward into the hollows behind each rise.
Crown is built during this pass as well, by running the outer laps slightly proud and finishing down the centre. Water that leaves quickly is worth more to a gravel lane than smoothing, since standing water softened the base originally.
The screen only earns its place once the stone is free
A removable sift screen in the floor of a land plane lets fines drop back to the lane while holding oversized rock inside the box. Fitted for the first ripping pass it would simply blind with wet paste, which is why the third pass is where it belongs.
By then the material is loose and the stones are freed from the crust, so they gather at the back of the box and can be tipped clear of the lane. Where the stone is already well graded, the screen simply comes out.
Moisture decides whether the day is worth starting at all
A narrow window sits between ground too saturated to break cleanly and ground hard enough to resist the teeth. Late winter offers it a few days after rain, once the surface has drained but the fines still hold moisture enough to bind again.
• Too wet: material smears and the screen blinds
• Too dry: fines will not bind, surface ravels
• Frost in the crust: wait for morning to lift
• After rain: allow two or three draining days

Measured against a contractor with a grader, a land plane asks for more time and a willingness to read the ground. It keeps the work in house and lets an owner repeat it whenever the lane calls for attention, which across a wet season matters more.
The shift among rural landholders has been toward planned maintenance at the end of winter, before the surface bakes and before a busy spring of traffic. Working the material while it stays workable takes far less effort than rescuing a failed lane.
