Dubai Chamber of Commerce Launches ESG Label to Encourage Sustainable Business Practices

In line with the UAE’s “Year of Sustainability,” the Dubai Chamber of Commerce has introduced a new initiative called the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Label. This label is aimed at encouraging businesses in Dubai to adopt more sustainable and responsible practices. The goal is to ensure that companies are mindful of their environmental impact, contribute positively to society, and follow strong governance practices.

The ESG Label has been developed by the Dubai Chamber’s Centre for Responsible Business. It is designed to help businesses evaluate how ready they are to adopt ESG principles, identify areas where they can improve, and gain recognition for their efforts. By adopting these practices, companies can not only contribute to a more sustainable future but also enhance their growth potential.

What is the ESG Label?

The ESG Label is a framework that businesses can use to assess how well they are performing in terms of sustainability and responsibility. It focuses on three main areas –

  • Environmental: How a company impacts the environment through its operations, such as reducing waste, cutting down emissions, and using resources efficiently.
  • Social: How a company treats its employees, customers, and communities, ensuring fairness, diversity, and positive contributions to society.
  • Governance: How a company is managed and led, including its internal policies, ethical practices, and transparency in decision-making.

The ESG Label helps businesses evaluate their efforts in these areas and provides a clear structure for them to follow.

A Collaborative Effort

The framework for the ESG Label was carefully crafted with input from both global and regional experts in the field of sustainability, as well as from members of the local business community in Dubai. This collaboration was essential to ensure that the label aligns with international standards while also taking into account local laws and regulations.

The Dubai Chamber worked hard to make sure the ESG Label is practical and easy for businesses to understand and use. It serves as a benchmark, helping companies measure their current ESG efforts and identify opportunities for improvement. By doing so, businesses can improve their image, attract potential investors, and contribute positively to Dubai’s economic and social development.

His Excellency Mohammad Ali Rashed Lootah’s Vision

The President and CEO of Dubai Chambers, His Excellency Mohammad Ali Rashed Lootah, spoke about the importance of the ESG Label in promoting sustainable business practices. He stressed that companies using the certification are encouraged to include sustainability in their main business operations and decision-making procedures.

According to Lootah, “The Dubai Chamber of Commerce ESG Label tackles the need for an all-encompassing strategy for environmentally and socially responsible business operations. Our goal is to motivate companies to include sustainability into their main business operations and decision-making procedures.”

In simple terms, Lootah’s message highlights that businesses must consider sustainability in everything they do, from how they treat the environment to how they manage their employees and make decisions.

Benefits for Businesses

There are several benefits for businesses that choose to apply for and receive the ESG Label. First and foremost, the label provides recognition for their efforts. This can help companies stand out in a competitive market and build a positive reputation among customers, investors, and business partners.

The ESG Label can also help businesses identify areas where they can improve. As part of the application process, businesses receive a detailed feedback report that outlines their strengths and weaknesses in each of the three areas – environmental, social, and governance. Additionally, businesses receive a score that reflects their level of ESG maturity. This score can be used as a starting point for further improvement.

Businesses that are awarded the ESG Label will receive a certificate valid for one year. During this time, they can continue working on their ESG practices and strive to improve even further. At the end of the year, they can reapply for the label and receive updated feedback and a new score.

Who Can Apply?

To apply for the ESG Label, businesses must have been operating for at least two years. This requirement ensures that companies have enough operational history to be evaluated fairly. The application process is open to companies from all sectors and industries in Dubai.

The application process is straightforward. Businesses need to complete a self-assessment and submit it to the Dubai Chamber. After submission, the Chamber will review the application and provide feedback.

Supporting Businesses in the Journey

To help businesses better understand the ESG Label and how to apply for it, the Dubai Chamber has already started hosting informational sessions. 224 people participated in a virtual roadshow that the Chamber recently conducted. During the roadshow, participants were given a detailed explanation of the ESG framework and the application process.

The Dubai Chamber plans to host more sessions in the future to further engage the business community and promote the adoption of the ESG Label. These sessions are an important part of the Chamber’s efforts to make sustainability a central part of Dubai’s business ecosystem.

Why Is the ESG Label Important?

The introduction of the ESG Label is part of a larger effort by the Dubai Chamber and the UAE government to promote sustainability across the country. The UAE has declared 2024 as the “Year of Sustainability,” and the ESG Label is one of many initiatives aimed at supporting this goal.

Through its promotion of sustainable business practices, the Dubai Chamber is contributing to the improvement of society and the environment. Businesses that implement ESG principles stand to gain not only from environmental advantages but also from increased investor appeal, enhanced brand recognition, and sustained prosperity.

Furthermore, the ESG Label helps businesses align with global sustainability trends. Around the world, companies are increasingly being judged on their ESG performance, and businesses in Dubai can gain a competitive edge by adopting these practices early.
