Etihad Rail to Start Passenger Service in 2026 – Dubai to Abu Dhabi in 25 Minutes

The United Arab Emirates is gearing up for a comprehensive revolution in transportation with the upcoming Etihad Rail passenger service launch in 2026. Etihad Rail is one of the nation’s largest infrastructure initiatives that will completely change intercity travel, enhance connectivity between emirates, and increase regional integration. With a national railway network of over 1,200 kilometers, Etihad Rail will connect 11 cities across all seven emirates and will replace overall road travel with an efficient, safe, and sustainable form of travel. Therefore, this initiative is one of the key approaches to travel conveniences for Emirati passengers.

Launch and Vision of Etihad Rail

Etihad Rail was originally established in 2009 and began with freight services which became operational in the year 2016. At present, the freight network covers 900 km and provides connection to important industrial centers and sea ports, including Khalifa Port, Jebel Ali Port, Fujairah Port, as well as logistics areas such as ICAD and Ghuwaifat.

Another significant service is passenger service, which will be launched in 2026. This represents a huge milestone for the UAE in developing public transport opportunities and reducing the number of cars on the road. The network has been made to align with the increasing population, tourism, and trade in the region.

In many ways, Etihad Rail stands as one of the best startup story examples in national infrastructure – transforming from a freight-only operation to a passenger-driven, sustainable mobility solution that connects cities and communities across the Emirates.

Train Features and Onboard Experience

Each Etihad Rail passenger train will carry up to 400 passengers with modern amenities provided to create a comfortable and connected experience. These amenities will include:

  • Wi-Fi
  • Entertainment
  • USB Charging
  • Luggage Racks
  • Business and Economy seating
  • Food & Beverage

Light grey cushioned seats will be arranged in groups of four with small tables, so you can have some personal space but still be functional. Passengers will also have digital screens that show live updates of the route, speed, outside temperature, and estimated time of arrival.

Confirmed and Expected Stations

Etihad Rail’s passenger network will reach all 11 cities in the UAE. The following stations have been confirmed:

  • Sakamkam, Fujairah: This is situated in the city center
  • University City, Sharjah: This is positioned near educational facilities and the airport

In addition to the confirmed locations for stations, the potential station sites are based on the construction currently taking place and what has been reported locally:

  • Dubai:  This is next to Jumeirah Golf Estates, with immediate access to the Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro Station
  • Abu Dhabi: This is along the pipeline corridor that separates Mussafah Industrial Area and Mohammed Bin Zayed City, situated close to Phoenix Hospital and Dalma Mall

Each station will incorporate existing public transport systems to provide ease of travel for passholders and visitors.

Projected Travel Times and Train Speeds

The trains will operate at speeds of 200 km/h. This will further reduce the comprehensive travel time between the major urban centers. The expected travel times are:

  • Abu Dhabi to Dubai:  57 mins
  • Abu Dhabi to Fujairah: 105 mins
  • Dubai to Fujairah: 50 mins
  • Abu Dhabi to Al Ruwais:  70 mins

Another fast rail project is also planned to link Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which is a train with a speed of 350 km/h. This will cut the travel time between Abu Dhabi and Dubai to a mere 30 minutes. The electrified high-speed line is still in the early stages of planning.

Test Rides and Scenic Journeys

Some people have already had the opportunity to ride on the train during test runs. One rider, Sarah Luqman, who is part of the National Experts Programme, shared her experiences online. She noted in that post that her journey on the train from Abu Dhabi to Dubai took 25 minutes while her journey from Dubai to Fujairah took about 90 minutes. The videos showing her trips during trial rides captured incredible views of the UAE’s many different landscapes, such as desert dunes, a variety of greenery, Almaha forests, and coastal regions. As stated by Etihad Rail engineer Kholoud Al Mazrouei, the fact that customers can see natural beauty and national landmarks along the way is one of the best highlights of this passenger service.

Sustainability and Smart Ticketing

Etihad Rail serves as a vital part of the UAE’s approach to sustainable transportation. The train network is intended to reduce carbon emissions, ease traffic congestion, and reduce fuel consumption. This will further contribute to the UAE’s overall environmental objectives.

A positive development in 2024 was the integration of the NOL card system so that passengers could now use their RTA-issued cards when ticketing and fare payments. This partnership between Etihad Rail and the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai helps to provide a simplified and consistent travel experience within the UAE.

Infrastructure Developments and Road Safety

The supporting infrastructure of this passenger train has also experienced upgrades. Recently, the RTA and Etihad Rail in Dubai opened a three-lane flyover on Al Yalayis Street. The purpose of this was to completely separate train and vehicle traffic, which allows continuous operation on the roadways.

Regional and International Expansion Plans

Etihad Rail’s objectives go beyond the UAE. In 2023, a contract was signed for the Hafeet Rail project which is a cross-border rail link that extends to 303 km, which runs from Sohar in Oman to Al Wathba in Abu Dhabi. The rail route will be connected to the UAE national network and reportedly will allow passenger transport between Oman and the UAE in approximately 100 minutes.

Additionally, further negotiations are underway for potential links to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Jordan, where Etihad Rail could be the backbone of a future GCC railway network.

Project Timeline and Completion Outlook

The first passenger services will start in 2026, but overall, the entire 1,200 km network will not be completed until 2030. The advantage of the different stages of the passenger services means that further development, station building, and system enhancements can occur continuously. Alongside the passenger services, freight services are also working and moving products every day. On an average day, highway mode freight services move over 22,000 tonnes of products, including granulated sulfur, throughout the country.

Etihad Rail: UAE’s Transportation Revolution

The launch of the Etihad Rail passenger service serves as an important step for the UAE. This step communicates an effective and future transport performance. Etihad Rail’s advanced infrastructure, a range of integrated payment systems, and reduced travel time at the regional level indicate a remarkable future as one of the key contributors to the mobility ecosystem of the UAE, which links emirates, generates economic development, and connects communities.
