How Will Dubai Handle Rapid Population Growth?

Dubai is preparing to manage the record-breaking rise in population, as the city aims to reach 5.8 million residents in the next 15 years. The emirate has executed the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan to make the city one of the best cities in the world to live in.

  • The RTA is developing the new Metro Blue Line. This line will cover a 30 km route and 14 stations. This will serve up to 320,000 passengers daily and help reduce pressure on the current Red and Green lines.
  • The city is also focusing on building better road networks. Major highways, like Emirates Road, are undergoing expansion. Moreover, projects, like the Al Shindagha Corridor, aim to cut travel time between older and newer parts of the city from more than an hour to just a few minutes.
  • The main goal of this master plan is to ensure that 55% of residents live within 800 m of a public transport station. This goal supports the 20-minute city idea, which will make sure residents can reach 80% of their daily needs within a short walk or ride.
  • This master plan is also focusing on improving the quality of life in Dubai by doubling its parks and open areas. It aims to keep 60% of the entire city as natural reserves by 2040.

With new metro lines, better road networks, and other developments, Dubai is sure that its infrastructure grows faster than its population. This master plan aims to keep the city a desirable place for expats by combining big opportunities with smart urban planning.
